Unfortunately, the Second World War left Escolta in devastation. What was once a residential and economic town in the late 16th century, Escolta was transformed into a bustling hub for premier business, leisure, and entertainment. After the Spanish-American war, Escolta became a heavily Westernized strip lined with American-inspired shops, theaters, and art deco structures. When the Americans arrived, the street swarmed with saloons and soldiers. It eventually became the shopping mecca catering to the Old Manila’s society. Dubbed as the “Queen of the Streets” it is romanced with culture, arts, and business across various points in Philippine history.Įscolta was once the place of settlement for Chinese merchants who made a living through the Galleon Trade during the Spanish regime. Escolta, or Calle de Escolta, evokes the nostalgia of the Old Manila in the 1930s.
